CALL FOR APPLICATION FOR DOCTORAL CONTRACTS
 2020 - 2023

As from June 1, 2020 the SHAL Doctoral School is issuing a call for application to students who have obtained a master's degree (research or professional) and have defended their dissertation at the latest on July 5th, 2020, and who wish to obtain funding to pursue a Ph.D.

Applications for a doctoral contract must be submitted directly via ADUM: www.adum.fr from June 1, 2020 until July, 5th, 2020 midnight.

The selection committee will examine applications and interview applicants as from July 6th, 2020

Applicants must provide the following documents:
  • A CV listing all the articles published and giving a short presentation of the applicant's career objectives (teaching, research, other profession, etc.).
  • A short thesis proposal in 5 or 6 pages (with bibliographic references and without appendix) including the research theme, literature review, methodology used, and a tentative bibliography (the references listed on the last page or in the footnotes must be cited in the body of the text). The proposal includes a time table that shows how the project can be completed within 3 years.
  • A detailed and substantiated recommendation by the future thesis supervisor approving the thesis proposal and confirming that it is in line with the laboratory's research themes.
  • The approval of the director of the host laboratory (this can be included in the same document as the supervisor's recommendation).
  • A certificate confirming that the master's dissertation has been defended and a distinction was obtained. Applicants must have obtained the master's degree with distinction (mention bien).
  • A certificate from the head(s) of the relevant department confirming the possible allocation of a teaching load equivalent to 64 hours per year, exclusively in the case of applicants who wish to have an increased teaching load included in their contract (a smaller teaching load of up to 36 hours per year can be assigned if this increased teaching load is not required).
  • The doctoral charter.
  • Confirmation of registration in STEP (French register of theses in preparation).
Note: Please save your documents in PDF format (when, for example, you have received a certificate by email in another format) rather than scanning them. If scanned, the document must be professionally scanned with a minimum resolution of 300 dpi. Poorly scanned documents, such as photos taken by phone, will be rejected.

An incomplete application will automatically be rejected. Application deadlines are final.

Application for ministerial contracts is limited to applicants who have never been enrolled in a doctoral program before and who will be starting a PhD in Nice for the first time. However, there is no age limit and the master's degree can be obtained earlier than the current year.

The Doctoral School of Societies, Humanities, Arts and Literature is awarding 7 contracts for the 2020-2023 period. Because of the limited number of contracts awarded, the Doctoral School Council decided at its meeting on April 3, 2013 to limit the number of applications submitted by each research unit to a maximum of three applications (no ranking of applicants is required). Research units that have more than three applicants are invited to make their own pre-selection, and possibly establish their own ranking.

The applicants retained at the end of these pre-selections will be interviewed on July 8, 2020 from 8 a.m. by a jury in charge of examining more particularly:
- The applicant's ability to conduct research, to master the methods and to build a future career around their research.
- Alignment of the proposed research with the thematic priorities and the conditions of supervision of the host team.

Applicants give a presentation of their project in 10 minutes maximum (PowerPoint slides are highly recommended and must be sent in ppt or pdf format to the DS director before Sunday July 7, 8 p.m. ) and answer questions fielded by the members of the selection committee. This interview is mandatory.

Applicants who wish to have an increased teaching load may also be asked about their teaching skills.

At the end of the interviews, the selection committee ranks the applicants by secret ballot and the president of the selection committee draws up the final list of accepted students and sends it to the College of Doctoral Studies.
